Chicken restaurant
Guatemala-born counter-serve chain specializing in fried & grilled chicken.
After a day of travel to Chicago from Orlando with little to eat, we stopped by to get a late evening dinner. Three of us shared two grilled chicken 4-piece specials with 2 sides. There was ample food for all of us for $20. The chicken was seasoned to perfection and the sides were good. We had beans, cole slaw, plantains and corn. They were all good. The cole sale had little mayonnaise. That’s the way we like it. The dining area was small, but met our needs. Everyone there was Spanish. We were the only English speaking people there. I felt like I was somewhere in South America. The service was a little slow. Guess they didn’t have enough staff at the later hour that we dined here. Parking was on the street, but we had no trouble finding a spot.
I miss the bowls which are off the new menu, but the quality & speed of service remain high. Prices are remarkably low.
Went there on a Saturday 7/11/20. Called ahead and the gentleman that worked there was very professional over the phone. Order was 100% correct and the food was fresh and delicious. I haven’t been there in two years prior but will be back soon.
Pollo Campero had been on my family’s radar for months, particularly because my husband LOVES fried chicken! We finally gave it a try and we were pleased. Our daughter got a sandwich and fries and she was happy, while hubby and I each had meals and tried a few different sides. The corn has a lot going on with peppers, seeds and a few other things in it, which I was on the fence about. I did like the coleslaw, the beans, and our absolute favorite was the plantains. I plan to try the grilled chicken and the yucca fries next.
What happened to Pollo Campero? They use to have multiple locations in the Chicagoland area. Now the only one I could find is in the corner shopping center by Lawerence & Pulaski Avenue. They do have locations in other states in the US & Central America w/it’s origins in Guatemala. I found the chicken to be very mediocre. (Maybe that why they’re gone?) W/all the competition in Chicago I can see why they are fading away. Too many great places like Bonchon, Crisp, Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken, even Popeyes…. the list goes on. Sorry no pictures
Man, I love good fried chicken. Pollo Campero is very good fried chicken. My wife and I have had this place in our sights for a few months now. We decided that it was time to check it out. You have no idea how much I love fried chicken I even think of myself as a expert on fried chicken. There are a lot of good chicken spots here in the Chicago area, I’m going to say this is one of the best. Everything I had was really good, even the sweet plantines were cooked perfect. They also have a bean dish that was really good too. If you like fried chicken I highly suggest this spot, I don’t think you’ll leave unsatisfied.
Experience: Note- Review was completed during the shelter in place/ Covid pandemic, and therefore, experience was based on take out and food. With that said, I was in the mood for chicken, but was unsure where I wanted to go. I knew I wanted something quick and as a result, came across this place. I always passed here on my way to work, but I never tried it. I am sure glad I did because the food definitely satisfied my fix! Parking: Parking lot is conveniently located in front of restaurant. The lot is shared with multiple businesses, so you are able to get some errands done without the hassle of trying to finding a spot. Worth: Staff was very professional and nice. I was able to order my food with ease. Waited about 5 minutes, with numerous customers before me. I ordered the 2 piece dark chicken with mash potatoes and a tortilla on the side (As pictured below). If you have a craving for chicken, but do not want to go to a regular KFC or Popeyes, this place will be a great option and definitely worth a visit!
I’m giving one star because I love the food at this place. However, I placed an online order & receive the usual order confirmation number and pick up time. I get there 10 minutes before closing and I see employees cleaning up. They won’t open the door and they won’t answer the phone. They just act like they’re closed and my order confirmation number means nothing. I never got my food. So I give them a break and I order by telephone the next time. I place my order by phone and when I get there, they say they can’t process the order because I hadn’t paid for it yet. The whole purpose of ordering online or by phone is so that I can just go pick it up and not wait in line. So I called the corporate office and explain the situations. They basically tell me that my complaint is in the abyss and they distance themselves from their restaurants. Horrible customer service and for that I’m deleting my Pollo Campero app and never going there again.
Those camperito Nugs are what popcorn chicken wants to be. Try out the grilled chicken! Super juicy and full of lime. The sauces here are the hidden secret. Get the cilantro sauce with the grilled chicken for a healthier alternative.
I hated it, I was so disappointed and upset to see a crowded and packed store with no one social distancing. At least three people inside waiting in line with no masks and none of the workers thought to notify them to get a mask? Went to the bathroom to wash my hands and the bathroom was gross with paper towels towers everywhere and water and hair. To top that off they didn’t even have any water cups. As someone who works in food service I understand that it can get hectic and crazy especially during these times but this was just unacceptable. Edit: they forgot my yuca fries… we notified them and they were rude and unapologetic
