It’s not often that I use “Greasy Spoon” as a colloquial term, however in the case of the Original Maxwell Street locations, you kinda have to. By definition; a small, cheap diner specializing in fried foods typically serving a high fat high calorie menu…BINGO! This place is in perpetual motion, 24 hours a day…everyday! You only appreciate the reality of this is while standing in line. The line never ends. There is no concept of time, day of the week, sunrise or sunset…it’ just another day to make a transaction, food for money. The consistency is what keeps you coming back… you develop a craving for the Polish Sausage and more importantly a need to interact with the unique Maxwell Street Experience. This is were it ends. NOTE: No spoiler explanation!

Ordered some early morning treats! The cheeseburger was godly, best cheeseburger I’ve had in awhile. Burrito is pretty lackluster as it’s full of the worst cuts of fatty beef & they are mostly fat. The polish was good as well, but outshined by the burger. Everything is packed nice & neat so there’s no mess with any of the food.

2 stars for the worst burrito I ever had. I should have got a polish. Legitimately garbage burrito it shouldn’t be on the menu.

Brown bagging it at the south side but inside this bag is not a cold 40 oz. bottle of Old Style instead a real beauty of Chicago sloppiness, a perfect imperfection! Stacked unevenly with layers of yellow cheese oozing out the sides, caramelized onions, beef and topped with a white bun that probably has not a single ounce of fiber! This ugly duckling I speak of is a Maxwell’s triple cheeseburger, biting into one of these brings back memories of an old Polaroid of my father working at one of these joints stacking bags of frozen fries! Or the memory of how he would come home after working his night shifts at Maxwells holding brown bags almost see-through from the grease full of goodies. We would share the ultimate breakfast of champions. Aside from the personal memory-lane trips this edible provided me; it is nonetheless a true delicious piece of Chicago street food. With it’s 24hour services feeds and aids the drunk at night, or the hungover in the early mornings. It’s cheap and reasonable pricing helps the Chicago middle-class man take out his entire family for a meal; or the local bum make better use of his change. At the end of the day Maxwell Street might seem like an ordinary burger spot to some, but it’s all about understanding the delicacy, exquisiteness, and daintiness behind a not so “gourmet” burger joint. It’s about finding beauty in the “ugly” and as the cliche quote goes “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” or in this case of the burger holder.

The pork chop sandwich is the reason why I come here. But be sure to ask them to put BBQ sauce on it. They put mustard sauce on it, but there’s nothing like bbq sauce to put a zing on this sandwich. It comes with fries. Bring cash. They also sell eggplant and chicken Parmesan sandwiches and BIG slices of pizza.

You are not a Chicagoan if you have not indulged in the sin that is “Maxwells.” With so many locations dotted throughout the city, this is our go to spot when the liquor in our system needs a contender – grease! Since I try to stray away from pork and beef, I normally go with a chicken taco or a chicken sandwich. It honestly shouldnt matter because Im pretty sure everything is cooked together. At this location though, I wont lie – be careful! lol During the day, you really dont have any worries, but if you will be coming here at night, especially after club hours, be cognizant of your surrounds, dont flash cash, dont leave your car doors open with valuables laying out, and dont just linger. Other than that, you’ll be fine. Have fun clogging your arteries and enjoy! (Almost ashamed to be the Duchess of this place *shrug*)

Local, fast-food fare with all the Chicago-friendly accompaniments. I recommend the “Original Maxwell Street Polish” with mustard and grilled onions. No modification necessary. Good value, convenient location and open 24/7. I would not advise venturing to this side of town outside of peak dining hours at night if not familiar with the West Garfield Park neighborhood. There are some beautiful, tourist-friendly attractions (e.g. Conservatory, etc.) along with some areas that may be troublesome for an outsider. Be sure to hedge against risk when considering your late night bites, just as all of us locals do regardless of the zip code.
