For those of you that know me up close and personal, you know that I have a special place in my heart for Colombia, especially the culture and the food. In the past couple of years, I have seen an expansion of Colombian eateries in the north side of Chicago. This weekend I had the opportunity to check out @lunaempanadashop on the northwest side of Chicago. I found out about this place after receiving a recommendation from @yelpchicago.. After surveying the menu and checking out for vegeterian options and looking at the Instagram page, I decided to place the order using the Yelp page. During this pandemic, this business is accepting online orders for pickup and delivery. I took a bus ride there and the page informed me that the order would be ready in 30 minutes On the first day, I ordered the SPC and the CBB, (not to be confused with CBD empanadas). The SPC empanadas are corn shelled empanadas with spinach, potato mozarella and cotija cheese. The CBB stands for Chipotle Black Bean. It is corn shelled empanada with chipotle spices and black bean. When I arrived there, the empanadas were hot . Both of the empanadas had a crunchy shell but soft in the inside. The spinach and cheese just oozed out and they were excellent. The same thing with the CBB empanadas. I admit….They were consumed rather quickly… I wanted to go right back The second day I came back to order another batch of SPC empanadas with the chicken empanadas and the paradise empanadas. The paradise empanadas were made with….. wait for it……A plantain based shell with guava, mozarella and cotija cheese. This time I ate with the pickiest eater who has no filter….My seven year old son. Since he eats chicken, I gave him the chicken empanadas and one of my paradise empanadas…..Once he bit into the chicken empanada, he gave me an immediate thumbs up and asked me for some more. I cautiously gave him the paradise empanada…He took a bit and said” Sabe a plátano….It tastes like a plantain….He added it is sweet.. Kid approved so you know it is all good. The paradise empanada was definitely a pleasant surprise and all of the ingredients worked to make this a delight for my heart and my mouth
I would have added photos but we ate them too fast. Seriously, some of the best empanadas. I placed the order and they were made fresh to order I got the chicken one and probably my least favorite just seemed a bit dry. However the beef and cheese and spinach ones were finger licking good. Also there sweet empanada with the guava and cheese…must try. It was burst of flavors and I loved it. Now the service was impeccable and such a welcoming environment. Friendly staff! Loved the food and would he back!
Green Effing Sauce! Literally amazing! Such a game changer! The food is soooo good here! I got the tinga arepa with patacones (aka tostontes). The chicken is so flavorful and the patacones are huge. The empanadas were so good! Doris gave two complimentary : chicken and beef! Amazing! They have Colombian drinks as well! My friend got the steak sandwich which was practically like a philly sandwich but better! The food is amazing here, it’s a small neighborhood joint but with much flavor and potential! Doris and her wife are so sweet! Support small business’s and their flavors.
I went here for takeout today and I was in the mood for a mid day snack. I had never been here before and the guy working there was super patient and helpful! I got the SPC for myself since I don’t eat meat. And the OG for my friend. The SPC was so delicious. The outside is golden and has a crunch to it. But the inside is so smooth. The potatoes and spinach and cheese are blended so perfectly together. It’s not too much dough, and they don’t skimp u on the filling! My empanadas were literally oozing. Really reasonable price I go 6 for 12 ish! I had never had empanadas like this and This place had been on my bucket list for a while so I’m glad I checked it out. Also I love the vibes of the place, they were playing Latin music- bachata and reggaeton, it made the wait for my food go by quick. I would have to agree with another review and say I wish the sauce had more of a kick to it, but overall it was pretty good! I also liked to change it up with the chipotle mayo the have available.
Delicious empanadas. Fantastic choices, including some vegetarian ones. They even have a sweet one that is so good it could be ordered as dessert. Very nice service, the place is clean and has a nice seating area. I haven’t tried the sandwiches, simply because the empanadas are too hard to pass up.
This empanada shop is amazing. Many choices, delicious flavors, delicious salsas to go with the empanadas. The hospitality is warm and friendly. Lucky to have this spot.
It would be impossible to leave this place without a smile on your face. Doris, the owner, greets you as if you’re family. She makes you feel like an old buddy, and you immediately get that feeling as if you’ve known each other for a while. Her energy radiates and helps make this place truly special. We got a dozen empanadas and I got to try pretty much all the different flavors. They use masa (dough made from ground corn), which results in soft and chewy empanadas. I personally love the texture. The fillings are generous and juicy! My favorites were the cheese, the OG, and the Pastelon-nada. Their sauces are also made fresh and they come in unique flavors that go perfectly with everything, whether on an empanada, an arepa or a sandwich. One sauce combines hot sauce and sriracha, while another combines avocado, cilantro and maybe lime? There’s another that’s made with pineapple, and of course, there’s their signature salsa roja, which is creamy and reminded me of spicy mayo. Oh and don’t sleep on the juices!!! They got some refreshing juices on deck that are also made in-house. The day of our visit, they had maracuya (passionfruit) and mora (blackberry). Either one makes for a perfect complement to the food.
Great empanadas for the NW side of Chicago!!!!! Lucky to have it so close to home. We had delivery and all 3 different meat empanadas were seasoned well and had a nice chimichurri dipping sauce. We also had the sweet plantains which were a real treat. Also, nice size portions, 2 to 3 empanadas will stuff you. Left overs reheated well for breakfast. We are now hooked as it is a nice alternative for pizza or fast food.
There’s a reason why they got a great rating. I’ve only tried their Empanadas and they’re really good. Definitely hit this spot, plus pricing is reasonable. You guys should perhaps start a Instagram account and maybe have some menu pamphlets in Spanish?
